Enjoying more hints of spring

Sometimes when two people have been married a long time they not only look alike but think alike. Such was the discovery this evening when the DGs realized they had photographed the same still leaf-less oak on their separate but same outings  this morning. They both set out on the Alpine Road walking/jogging trail this morning with the goal that each of them would do their thing for an hour. Both were pleased to be moving faster than they had done previously. Early on they had sun; then the showers returned. But the mild temperatures continued to herald spring.

First Blush: Chasing away the clouds with Esther Satterfield

Clouds over Palo Alto

It startled the female DJ/DG (what is her name?) was working from home the afternoon of the recent “UCSF day” and listening to KCSM. Out of nowhere came a voice from the past, Esther Satterfield. Her two solo albums (now sitting in a dusty box in the garage) along with Chuck Mangione’s Land of Lake Believe, on which she appears as a vocalist, had been part and parcel to her existence during the late 70s – and of son John’s too.

Satterfield stopped recording and no CDs were issued. And because the turntable was shed about the time the DGs moved to Menlo 20 years ago, there’s been no Esther – until yesterday. Inspired by hearing her on the radio, the DJ did a search and  found a website that had digitized both The Need to Be (1976) and Once I Loved (1974) and downloaded both. Esther is once again her companion, accompanying her on her dawn jogs yesterday and today. What a thrill to hear the lyrical version of Chase the Clouds Away after all this time. It’s like rediscovering a long lost friend, which coincidentally she also did today, reconnecting with someone she knew both in high school and at UCLA.

Ziggy joins the dawn patrol

Ziggy the dogTo the female DJ’s dismay, Ziggy a female Chow/Aussie or Border Collie mix, was not in a mood to be photographed this morning. She and her mistress our new members of the Dawn Patrol on Tuesdays and Thursday around Lake Lagunita. Her jolly continence and distinct looks make her an instant cheer up. Better pix to come…

A post-rain walk in Golden Gate Park

San Francisco Botanical Garden Feb 2010

It was technically not a First Blush walk, as the female traded in her DJ status to be part of the Dual Gs who made their way up to San Francisco for what they call a “UCSF day.” All appointments were completed expeditiously but started very early this morning. And the news was good; the MRI showed no sign of the tumor, well, doing anything but just sitting there. “The tumor looks good,” is how neuro-oncologist Dr. Susan Chang says it. (Having a tumor sitting in a brain really isn’t good, but the DGs understand her meaning.)

Their journey to the City started about the same time the female DG goes out on her morning jog, so she decided to take a walk during the male DGs MRI. Golden Gate Park conveniently located  just down the hill from UCSF . The rain cooperated – staying away for a route that included a spin through the San Francisco Botanical Garden, where the daffodils were poking through the winter soil. Her Uncle Stuart was a gardener in the Park but whether he ever tended the plants on display in the the Botanical Society’s garden, she ‘s not sure. Evidently deep budget cuts are threatening the garden’s maintenance preservation;  an admission charge to visitors who don’t live in the City is one solution.  Having those free, open gates makes it easy to take a quick spin. But she understands…

First Blush: Finally, a sunrise that rocks

sunrise over Lake Lagunita on 2/23/10

When you’re a Dawn Jogger, your needs are minimal but it does require a vibrant sunrise every once in a while. Timing is everything and the female DJ could see the hot pink sky in the distance as she made her way across the first and second fairway of the golf course. But the time she was on the rise adjacent to Lake Lagunita, it had turned orange. She’ll take it…

First Blush: Hints of spring

Winter trees at dawn

The female Dawn Jogger is only a little bit scared that she was excited about the signs of spring she saw not quite 18 hours ago but is now wondering exactly what they were. It is lighter earlier. And the birds are singing. But the trees remain bare…

Churched, exercised and drowned

mustard along Sand Hill Road

The Dual Gs managed to get church out of the way (very pleasant in Trinity’s lovely chapel) and their weekly shopping at  Menlo Farmer’s Market done before the rain came, but not so for the female DG’s Sunday walk. She donned full all-weather gear and set out for the Stanford Shopping Center, where she was to meet the male DG in his quest for a pair of Crocs to wear in his just completed new garden. They were clearly looking in the wrong places – couldn’t find baking sheets that would fit in the small oven, either. By the time it was time to head back home, the rain was really coming down. All the better to make the spring mustard grow even higher…
