First Blush: Ducklings at dawn

Ducklings at Lake Lagunita 4/30/10

The female DJ spotted the first batch of ducklings – always a great discover – shortly after dawn this morning at Lake Lagunita. The mother duck was being kept pretty busy, accounting for all 14 of her brood. A rare moment of family togetherness was captured in photo. Most of the time they could be seen swimming in six different directions…

First Blush: Yet another fab Dish morning

Big Dish trail April 2010

It seems that every week in April has brought a two day period of rain showers. The result is some of the tallest grass and mustard that the female DJ has seen since she moved back to the Bay Area 20 years ago. The earlier and earlier sunrise (now about 6:15 am) means bright mornings when she hits the Dish. Wow, was it pretty just after dawn today…

First Blush (almost): Brains, Giants and horses

San Francisco Mounted PatrolFor years the male DG has remarked about the female DG: “There are three things you’ve never gotten bored with – the Giants, horses and me!”

It was a little bit of all three today for the female DJ/DG. It was a “UCSF” day, which means they headed up to UCSF early where the male DG stuck his head in a 3 Tesla MRI machine to check the status of his Stage 3 glioma. As is the usual drill, once the female DG had gotten him safely “tucked in,” she headed over to Golden Gate Park, just three blocks away from the Parnanssus campus. There had been rain showers all morning, but for her three-mile jaunt, it was nothing but sunshine. And an encounter with two members of the San Francisco Mounted Patrol. (Oh, the beauty of horses.)

It would have been a triple play kind of day – the MRI verdict was “no tumor growth” – is only Tim Lincecum had been allowed to complete his near flawless performance. Instead he got yanked in the 9th and the Giants fell to the Phillies. But two out of three isn’t bad…

First Blush: It’s raining again

Great Blue Heron on Stanford land April 27 2010
If it’s Tuesday, it must be raining. At least that’s the way the female DJ feels. Unlike last Tuesday morning when it was pouring and cold, today’s rain was more a steady drizzle with temps in the balmy 60s range. The inclement weather wasn’t interfering in the Great Blue Heron’s morning hunt. And he/she was willing to pose for a photo once again…

First Blush: Oh so gorgeous at Arastradero

Arastradero Preserve April 2010

The female DJ hadn’t jogged the Arastradero Preserve for almost a year and knew if she was to catch it at its spring best, she needed to act fast. So off she went just past dawn today. It was a bit like encountering an old friend, remembering the spot where the wasps kept attacking and the meadow where the coyote pups were spotted. This morning it was all about baby bunnies and blue skies. Plus the great tunes on Pink Martini’s new Splendor in the Grass album

Grace and Chris share fruits of their garden

Chris and Grace

A couple of months ago, the male DG helped Grace plant some radishes in his new garden. Yesterday, they shared the fruits of their labor. Grace even tried to eat one – no surprise, she spit it out. But she does love running around and digging in the garden. Plus doing somersaults on the grass. As for the gnats, not so much. Today a table and chair just Grace size were added, ready for the next visit…

First Blush: Yep, another pretty Dish morning

Going up the ‘back side’ of the Dish from Piers Lane, there appeared to be a lot of haze in the air (and none of the herd in sight). But as the female DJ turned around just after reaching the top, the skies were a shimmering blue. To go along with all the tall green grass…
