Not gimpy and just a bit grumpy

Given the fact the female Dawn Jogger is only a wee bit gimpy (and it has nothing to do with her 18 months ago Achilles tendon surgery), she decided that 2011 was a good reason to move beyond Gimpy and Grumpy. Her latest dawn jogging adventure can be found here.

First Blush: A very snowy and uncrowded Central Park

 Central Park New York 12/30/10

Central Park New York 12/30/10Five days post the big blizzard of 2010 Central Park remains largely snow bound. Even the main road that circles the Park had patches of snow on it (and no cars yet). The female Dawn Jogger did the full six mile circuit, dodging patches of ice along the route and enjoying the hills.  She was hardly early, setting out just after 8:30 am, but found few other fellow joggers or walkers out. It wasn’t cold – 30 degrees but no wind so felt warmer – sunny skies. The few who were out all seemed to be European. Where is everyone?…

First Blush (and then some): Signs of the times and other surprises

blinking light on tree limb

The female Dawn Jogger took off on her Menlo Park neighborhood run later than usual this morning but it was still dark enough for a blinking light hung from a tree limb to get her attention. What was it doing there – and why was it flashing? Those with a more supernatural bent might have explanations.

BirdhouseThe story continued in the afternoon. She’d been out the house on errands for much of the morning and had returned for lunch. After being at home for about an hour, she left for an InMenlo appointment only to find someone had left a bird house on driveway. There was an immediate coincidence; the woman she was about to interview specializes in bird paintings. But it could hardly be some pre-interview bit of generosity from someone she’d never met.

With no note attached, it remained a mystery until her return. She turned it over to see the signature of a long time (if MIA) friend. A beautiful gesture of love and support…

Let’s go Giants – YEA!!!!!

San Francisco Giants flag
When the DG learned in July that new tumors had appeared in the male DG’s brain, they understood they had only months together. So they are a bit surprised, here in early October,  to be savoring the opportunity to cheer the Giants on to their division title. And let’s face it, the Giants weren’t exactly looking like pennant contenders in July or August…

First Blush: Instant overnight water tank

The female Dawn Jogger ran the exact route she ran today on Tuesday morning – and swears this water tank (at least she thinks that’s what it is) adjacent to the Stanford Golf Course wasn’t there. She has a vague recollection of a foundation. Could it have been built in 48 hours? And why is it there? Guess it’s time for some investigative reporting…

First Blush: Perils of non-dawn jogging

People are sometimes surprised that the female Dawn Jogger is not overly concerned with some of the critters she encounters in the early morning, including coyotes and bobcats (never a mountain lion, although they’ve been sighted in the area she jogs.) This morning she admits to sleeping in and suffered the consequences. The sun had broken though and brought out creature of a serpentine nature. She’s irrationally afraid of snakes and just plain doesn’t like them. Even a harmless, young gopher snake (she could see no rattles) who was just warming up for the day…

First Blush: Bruins spotted at dawn

College golfers at Stanford Driving Range

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, the female Dawn Jogger passes by the Stanford driving range (that her father so cherished – a bucket of balls was just a five minute car ride away!). There’s usually just a grounds keeper hanging around but today it was teaming with golfers. Given all the team colors, it looked like they were preparing for an intercollegiate competition. The Bruins were easy to spot in their baby blue…
