First Blush: Got the attention of young Charolais

For the first time since arriving in France, the female DJ jogged. Not quite at dawn – a sleep-in morning had been declared. But still early enough that nary a car paced by on the country lanes.

Elevage Daubard’s (the cattle operation just down the hill) youngest members of the herd have been moved from birthing pens to an adjacent field. The female DJ think they’re six weeks old or less.

Now it’s off to lunch high in the Maconnais…

Taking stock of the Ameugny stock

Duck and poultry in Ameugny, FranceThe female DG actually got her mileage in at dawn today; the male DG has a head cold and opted out of the AM service at Taize. But as the female DG was awake at her regular time, she decided to walk the “long” way, which is down the hill from Ameugny, then along the Voie Verte, before climbing back up the hill to Taize. It’s a route that gets the miles in (about 3 1/2) but lacks interesting photo possibilties.

It also doesn’t allow her to check in on the local poultry, sheep, and cows, which are, more or less, down the hill from their temporary (but very satisfactory) residence. So after a long day of catching up on InMenlo content, she headed down hill to the valley, which allowed her to check in on what the chickens – and one very strange looking duck – were up to. Meanwhile the Charolais along the way seem to recognize her and beg for a pet on the head…

Happy Mother’s Day (from where it’s not)

cattle in a field in Ameugny

It was drippy foggy this morning as the DGs made their way to Sunday Eucharist service with the brothers of Taize.  The female DG – who gets three mother’s day celebrations this year – one already held with John, Julie and Grace; one today (dinner at La Table de Chapaize); and again on 5/30 (Fête des Mères) – decided this shot of calves huddled around one female cow (had their mother’s already been removed from the field? she’ll check tomorrow AM) was a good enough Mother’s Day photo.
